Letcar Mechanical is looking for an experienced Sheet Metal Superintendent in Fort McMurray, Alberta to join our growing team and provide field leadership for commercial and industrial sheet metal projects.
This role is ideal for an experienced Journeyperson Sheet Metal Worker who has progressed into a leadership position and takes pride in building strong crews, maintaining high standards of workmanship, and delivering projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
The Sheet Metal Superintendent will be responsible for overseeing Sheet Metal Journeypersons, Apprentices, and other field personnel while coordinating closely with Project Managers, site supervision, clients, and other trades. The successful candidate will provide hands-on leadership in the field while ensuring manpower, materials, equipment, safety, quality, and productivity requirements are effectively managed.
Projects may include new commercial and industrial installations, HVAC duct deficiency repairs, system replacements, industrial ventilation, exhaust systems, and other sheet metal and HVAC-related scopes.
Depending on project requirements, employees may work on:
- 12 days on / 2 days off rotational schedules
- Local in-town 5 days on / 2 days off schedules with overtime opportunities available
Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision of Sheet Metal Journeypersons, Apprentices, and field crews
- Plan, organize, coordinate, and oversee sheet metal activities to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to schedule
- Review and interpret blueprints, drawings, specifications, shop drawings, scopes of work, and project requirements
- Coordinate installation of low-, medium-, and high-pressure HVAC ductwork systems
- Oversee installation of industrial ventilation systems, exhaust systems, air handling units, and related HVAC components
- Plan crew activities, manpower requirements, work sequencing, materials, tools, equipment, and site logistics
- Assign work to field personnel and provide clear direction regarding daily priorities and production expectations
- Monitor crew productivity and project progress and identify potential schedule, manpower, or material issues before they impact the project
- Ensure layout, fabrication, assembly, installation, sealing, insulation, and pressure testing are completed to project specifications and applicable standards
- Conduct regular field inspections to ensure workmanship meets Letcar Mechanical's quality expectations
- Identify installation conflicts, deficiencies, and field conditions and coordinate appropriate solutions with Project Management, engineering, clients, and other trades
- Coordinate with Project Managers and other site supervisors to ensure work is properly sequenced and project milestones are achieved
- Participate in project planning, look-ahead scheduling, coordination meetings, and daily site meetings as required
- Communicate material, equipment, drawing, and information requirements to Project Management in advance of when they are required in the field
- Ensure crews have the tools, equipment, materials, drawings, and information required to perform their work efficiently
- Maintain accountability for tools, equipment, and company assets assigned to the project
- Ensure work areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and organized condition
- Promote a positive, professional, and respectful work environment
- Mentor Journeypersons and Apprentices and support the development of technical and leadership skills within the team
- Address performance or workmanship concerns promptly and communicate significant issues to Project Management
- Assist with onboarding and orientation of new field employees
- Verify completed work and assist with deficiency identification, corrective work, commissioning, and project closeout activities
- Maintain accurate field documentation, including progress updates, manpower information, deficiencies, material requirements, and other project records as required
Safety Responsibilities
- Lead by example and promote a strong safety culture across all sheet metal crews
- Ensure all work complies with Letcar Mechanical safety policies, client requirements, site procedures, and applicable Alberta occupational health and safety regulations
- Ensure workers understand project hazards, safe work procedures, and task-specific requirements before work begins
- Participate in and/or lead toolbox meetings, field-level hazard assessments, inspections, and safety discussions as required
- Ensure appropriate PPE, fall protection, rigging, hoisting, access equipment, and safe work practices are used
- Identify unsafe conditions or behaviours and take immediate corrective action
- Coordinate with site safety personnel and Project Management regarding safety concerns, incidents, and corrective actions
- Ensure employees are properly trained and qualified for the work they are assigned
Quality & Productivity
- Maintain a high standard of quality and craftsmanship across all sheet metal installations
- Ensure installations comply with project drawings, specifications, applicable codes, manufacturer requirements, and industry best practices
- Monitor labour productivity and ensure crews are working efficiently while maintaining safety and quality standards
- Identify opportunities to improve installation methods, sequencing, crew utilization, and overall project efficiency
- Minimize rework by ensuring work is properly planned, coordinated, and inspected throughout installation
- Ensure deficiencies are addressed promptly and documented appropriately
Requirements
- Journeyperson Sheet Metal Worker certification
- Strong commercial and/or industrial sheet metal experience
- Previous experience in a Foreperson, General Foreperson, Superintendent, or similar field leadership role
- Strong knowledge of HVAC duct systems, industrial ventilation systems, and sheet metal installation practices
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, specifications, and shop drawings
- Demonstrated ability to plan and supervise multiple crews and work activities
- Strong understanding of construction sequencing, manpower planning, and field productivity
- Ability to identify installation conflicts and develop practical field solutions
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to effectively coordinate with Project Managers, clients, supervisors, other trades, and field personnel
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
- Ability to manage changing priorities in a fast-paced construction environment
- Strong commitment to workplace safety and safe work practices
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to pass drug and alcohol testing
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supervising commercial and industrial sheet metal crews
- Experience working on large industrial or oil sands projects
- Experience with HVAC deficiency, repair, replacement, and retrofit projects
- Familiarity with Alberta construction standards, codes, and site requirements
- Experience with project planning, look-ahead schedules, manpower forecasting, and material coordination
- Leadership and safety training applicable to industrial construction environments
