Field Operations Supervisor
Low-Rise Residential Concrete & Drain · Donald Group · Etobicoke, ON (on site across the GTA daily)
$85,000 to $110,000 a year, plus benefits · Full-time, year-round
The job, straight up
We build low-rise residential concrete and drain across the GTA, on more than 100 sites from Niagara to Bowmanville. We have been at it since 1953. We are family-owned, one of the largest concrete and drain companies in the country. Average tenure here is 12 years.
This is a salaried management job. You run several of our crews and the foremen who lead them, on more than one site at a time. You are not on the tools. Your job is to keep the crews working safely and on budget, watch the numbers, sort out problems on the spot, and deal with the builder, the inspector, and the supplier. We run on data here. That means tracking productivity, scoring quality, doing field audits, and finding better ways to do the work (we call it Kaizen).
If you have run more than one crew at a time, and you build your own spreadsheets instead of waiting for someone to send you one, read on. People who do the job well move up here.
This is not a builder’s site-coordination job, and it is not a single-crew foreman job. You will be running several crews and the foremen under them. Not coordinating subtrades on one project, and not leading one crew yourself. If that is your background, this is not the right fit, and that is fine.
What you’ll do
- Run several concrete and drain crews and their foremen across a few active sites at once.
- Keep each site on schedule and on budget, and back it up with numbers.
- Set up and keep the productivity tracking going, log the quality ratings, and run the field audits across your sites.
- Find where work is being wasted and change how it gets done so it stays fixed.
- Make good calls fast, on site, with clients and inspectors watching.
- Keep your sites safe and hold everyone to the safety rules, company and legal, with no exceptions.
- Be the point of contact for builders, city inspectors, and suppliers, and protect the margin on extras, change orders, and purchasing.
What you’re signing up for
- Early starts. You are first on site, before the crews, around 5:30 a.m.
- The pace is fast and you are covering more than one site.
- You are out on the sites every day. This is not a desk job.
We are telling you this now so you can decide if it suits you. The people who do well here do not mind the early mornings and like sorting out problems.
What you need
- At least 3 years running more than one crew and their foremen (general foreman or field supervisor level) in residential or similar construction. Concrete and drain experience is a big plus.
- You are good with numbers, you build and use your own Excel tools, and you can make accurate calls under pressure.
- You look at how the work is being done and you make it better.
- You can hold your ground with foremen and strong personalities, and set the standard every day.
- You are okay being first on site before a 5:30 a.m. start, and you live within about 30 minutes of our Etobicoke office.
- A college background in civil or construction engineering technology, construction management, or something similar is a plus, but experience counts more. We care about what you can do.
- A history of staying and growing with the companies you have worked for.
What we offer
- A real path to move up into senior site and operations roles. We promote from within.
- A company that runs on systems and numbers, where being good with data actually matters.
- A steady employer with more than 70 years behind it and a family-business feel.
- Extended health and dental.
- 3% RRSP match.
How to apply
We want a small number of strong people, not a pile of applications. Along with your resume, tell us in a few lines:
1. How many crews and foremen you have run at the same time, and for how long.
2. A time you used data, or a tool you built yourself, to fix a problem or make a site run better.
3. What time you usually start on your current job, and why you are ready to step up.
If your application does not cover these, we may not read it. We will only contact the people we want to interview.
Donald Group is committed to diversity and inclusivity in employment and welcomes applications from qualified individuals of diverse backgrounds. We provide accommodations for people with disabilities. If you require an accommodation at any stage, let us know and we will work with you to meet your needs
