Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Senior Accountant to join our dynamic finance team. This position is ideal for individuals looking to take the next step in their career in accounting and finance. The Senior Accountant will assist in various accounting functions, ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance with relevant regulations. The successful candidate will have a strong grasp of accounting principles and be eager to learn and grow within the organization.
Key Roles:
- Financial Reporting – Contribute to the preparation of monthly financial statements, job cost analysis, and budget tracking, annual review support.
- Data Integrity & Reconciliation – Ensure all financial entries are posted correctly; reconcile bank and credit card statements, update key financial reports to aid weekly departmental forecasting.
- Project & Job Cost Accounting – Track and monitor job costs (labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors), analyze budget vs. actual costs, support project management with financial insights.
- Internal Controls & Process Improvement – Ensure internal controls are being maintained within the finance department. Work with the Financial Controller to improve and document accounting systems and workflows.
- Payroll & Compliance Review – Review & provide coverage for the weekly technician payroll, complete taxation filings for source deductions.
Performance Metrics:
- Month end close completed on or before expected deadline.
- Data entry accuracy of greater than 98%
Key Responsibilities:
1. Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Aid in the preparation and review of monthly financial statements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness
- Deliver insightful variance analysis (budget vs. actual, job performance) with clear recommendations to management
- Coordinate key aspects of the month-end and year-end close processes, identifying and resolving issues proactively
- Act as a primary liaison for external accountants, supporting annual reviews and audits
- Support the Controller in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning activities
2. Data Integrity & Financial Oversight
- Maintain ownership of general ledger integrity, ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded and supported
- Oversee completion and review of bank, credit card, and key balance sheet reconciliations
- Identify discrepancies, assess risk, and implement corrective actions in a timely manner
- Update financial reporting tools and dashboards to improve visibility for leadership
- Drive continuous improvements in data accuracy and reporting processes
3. Project & Job Cost Leadership
- Oversee job costing processes, ensuring accurate and timely capture of labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs
- Provide proactive analysis on project profitability, cost overruns, and margin trends
- Review and validate WIP schedules and revenue recognition, ensuring alignment with project progress
- Partner closely with project managers to deliver actionable financial insights and support operational decision-making
- Contribute to improving cost control practices and project financial performance
4. Internal Controls & Process Optimization
- Support the Controller in maintaining and strengthening internal controls and financial governance
- Take a lead role in documenting, standardizing, and improving accounting systems and workflows
- Identify inefficiencies and implement process improvements that enhance accuracy and reduce cycle times
- Ensure audit readiness through strong documentation, controls, and adherence to best practices
- Act as a key resource in evaluating and implementing system or process changes
5. Payroll Oversight & Compliance
- Review and oversee weekly payroll processing, ensuring accuracy of wages, allocations, and deductions
- Ensure timely and compliant payroll tax remittances and filings
- Provide guidance and backup support for payroll functions
- Monitor compliance with applicable legislation and internal policies, mitigating risk
- Resolve complex payroll issues and support continuous improvement of payroll processes
6. Leadership & Controller Support
- Act as a trusted advisor and operational partner to the Controller
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and review support to junior accounting staff
- Step in to support or lead the function in the Controller’s absence when required
- Assist with cash flow monitoring, financial risk management, and strategic initiatives
- Drive a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the finance team
Qualifications
- Knowledge and experience of full-cycle accounting process.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Strong analytical skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other financial reporting tools.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience with JONAS Construction Software is a plus.

Pay: $65,000.00-$85,000.00 per year
