North Island Students’ Union is a non-profit organisation representing 5,000 full-time students at North Island College. The Students’ Union is run by a Board of Directors comprising elected students, and its operations include advocacy, services, and community connections. The Students’ Union is seeking an Organiser for August 10 – April 30, 2027.
The position will report to the Executive Director and the Staff Relations Officer of the Students’ Union and work closely with Union office staff and the Board of Directors. This position will be based in the Courtenay campus office, with travel to Campbell River and Port Alberni for events.
Hours of work: 35 - 40 hours per week, wage scale, $23 - 29
Capabilities:
A friendly demeanour, enthusiasm and genuine interest in helping others are important attributes for the Organiser role. Responsibilities include regular interaction with students, the campus community and the public. Verbal, interpersonal and organisational communication skills are critical for understanding questions and conveying accurate information about the Union. The Organiser will work in coalition with the Board to deliver the Union’s social and political events, including the distribution of campaign materials. Other duties include explaining access to services provided, such as the health and dental plan, the student discount service and more.
The Organiser will engage with members through classroom speaking and will help recruit and coordinate volunteers on campus. Opportunities exist to strengthen and develop community connections, including food security work, access to safer sex supplies, and more. The Union maintains a presence across many levels of College committees, and the Organiser has opportunities to build on these relationships.
The Organiser shall have the following qualifications:
- A minimum of two years’ previous work experience in the not-for-profit sector and/or membership-based organisation, in combination with a certificate or diploma or,
- A degree in a relevant discipline.
Further:
- Strong verbal, written, interpersonal & organisational communication skills.
- Willingness to speak publicly.
- Experience producing reports, making presentations and undertaking office administration functions.
- Experience with computer word-processing, spreadsheet, and graphic design software. (Canva, Adobe, MS Office, Apple devices and more)
- Commitment to a high standard of member service.
- Able to treat all individuals fairly & with respect, at all times.
- Ability to work both independently and under direction.
- Preference to North Island College Alumni.
- Current, valid BC driver’s license, clear driver’s abstract and a reliable vehicle.
- Preference for candidates with:
- Experience in the student movement, particularly in British Columbia.
- Experience developing and implementing social justice campaigns and advocacy work.
