About the Clients:
We're seeking a compassionate caregiver for a couple in their 80s and 90s living independently in their single-level bungalow in Bowmanville. The husband, 90, recently returned home from hospital with severe back pain, nerve issues, and spinal misalignment from previous falls. He uses a walker, is on pain medication, and has a history of cancer (currently inactive) with ongoing oncology follow-ups. He receives government-funded PSW support three days weekly and will begin physiotherapy. The wife, 85, is independent but experiences some memory difficulties and occasional loneliness. Both value their independence and control over their environment, though they're adjusting to accepting help for the first time.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with personal care including help with dressing, putting on socks, and monitoring for skin breakdown due to reduced mobility
- Light housekeeping tasks such as changing bed linens, cleaning kitchens and bathrooms, and laundry
- Meal preparation and planning, including preparing dinner items in advance
- Medication reminders to ensure both clients stay on schedule
- Provide gentle memory prompts and redirection as needed
- Offer companionship and conversation, particularly for the wife who experiences loneliness
- Occasional transportation for errands or appointments
- Support with activities of daily living that have become challenging due to the husband's increased pain and reduced mobility
What We're Looking For:
- Experience with mobility assistance including walker use
- Patient, calm demeanor with excellent communication skills
- Ability to build trust with clients who are new to receiving care and may be cautious about letting people into their home
- Strong English communication skills without heavy accents, as this is important for the clients' comprehension and comfort
- Experience with post-hospitalization care and memory support
- Someone who takes initiative, is reliable and consistent, and respects the clients' desire for independence
- Comfortable working with couples and managing care for two individuals simultaneously
Schedule:
Tuesday and Thursday, 2-hour visits each day (4 hours weekly total). Preferred visit times are either 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. Flexibility for potential weekend visits may be discussed. This schedule supplements existing government PSW services on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Start date as soon as possible, ideally late next week.
