Position Summary
The Payroll & Benefits Specialist is responsible for the accurate, timely, and confidential administration of payroll and employee benefits for Northern Resource Trucking (NRT). This includes processing payroll for drivers, owner‑operators, shop employees, and administrative staff, while overseeing benefit enrollments, changes, and inquiries.
Payroll Administration
- Process weekly and bi‑weekly payrolls for employees and contractors with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Verify trip sheets, logs, hours, overtime, premiums, and allowances.
- Calculate earnings, taxable benefits, reimbursements, and deductions.
- Manage payroll changes such as new hires, terminations, wage adjustments, and role changes.
- Reconcile payroll registers, source deductions, and general ledger accounts.
Benefits Administration
- Administer group benefits plans, including health, dental, disability, life insurance, and pension plans.
- Process enrollments, changes, terminations, and beneficiary updates.
- Coordinate with benefits providers on claims, discrepancies, and plan adjustments.
- Provide employees with clear, respectful support regarding benefits coverage and processes.
- Maintain accurate benefits data aligned with payroll records.
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with:
- Saskatchewan Employment Act
- Canada Labour Code
- CRA payroll and benefits taxation
- Indigenous partnership reporting (as applicable)
- Prepare and submit payroll remittances, ROEs, and benefits premium payments.
- Assist with year-end activities including T4s, T4As, and reconciliations.
- Support internal and external audits.
Employee & Contractor Support
- Respond to inquiries regarding payroll, benefits, and employment policies.
- Provide guidance on pay statements, deductions, benefits coverage, and processes.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism.
Systems & Process Optimization
- Utilize payroll and HRIS systems (e.g., Payworks or similar).
- Maintain data accuracy across systems.
- Identify opportunities to streamline payroll and benefits processes.
- Support system upgrades or transitions.
Qualifications
Education & Certifications
- Diploma in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field preferred.
- PCP (Payroll Compliance Practitioner) designation Required.
- CEBS (Certified Employee Benefits Specialist) is an advantage but not required.
Experience
- 3+ years of payroll and/or benefits experience, ideally in transportation, logistics, or industrial sectors.
- Experience with driver/owner‑operator payroll is a strong asset.
- Experience with group benefits plan administration.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation and benefits administration.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Proficiency with Excel and payroll systems.
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.

Salary Range $55,000 to $65,000 depending on experience
