Job Description: A Backhoe Operator holding a valid DZ or AZ licence is required to support our Rectification/Repairs department. The successful candidate will both operate the backhoe and drive the crew’s truck on site, performing localized excavation and repair of existing sewer and watermain infrastructure, deficiency and warranty work, and the hauling of materials, equipment and spoil to and from the worksite. The operator must excavate carefully around live, existing services, be aware of proper rigging of pipe, manhole sections, etc., and ensure safe work procedures are followed during the lowering of materials into the excavation.
Main Duties:
- Operate the backhoe to carry out localized excavations (spot digs) for the repair and replacement of existing sewer, watermain, service connections, valves, hydrants, manholes and catch basins.
- Safely operate and drive the crew’s truck (DZ or AZ) to transport the backhoe, materials, tools and spoil between the yard and active repair sites.
- Carefully expose and excavate around live, existing underground utilities, hand-digging or daylighting where required to avoid damaging services.
- Rig and lower pipe, fittings and manhole sections into the excavation, following safe hoisting procedures.
- Ensure all excavation and trench work meets OHSA requirements, including trench boxes, slide-rails, shoring, shafts, etc.
- Backfill, compact and prepare reinstated trenches and surfaces for restoration (asphalt, concrete, curb and sod).
- Respond to emergency repairs such as watermain breaks and sewer failures, often on short notice and in varying weather conditions.
- Perform daily pre-operational inspection of both the backhoe and the truck, secure all loads, and carry out regular maintenance to ensure proper and safe functioning.
- Identify defective parts or malfunctioning equipment components and report them promptly.
- Follow proper safety guidelines and procedures including reporting any potentially unsafe work practices.
- Ability to work in collaboration with the Foreman, Site Supervisors, and Health and Safety Department to investigate damage, incidents and/or near misses on the worksite to ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the TACC Construction Ltd.’s Health and Safety Program.
- Review the daily schedule and follow specific instructions for each repair location.
- Capable of diligently focusing on attention to safety, communication, stamina, accuracy, teamwork, and time management.
Qualifications:
Must haves:
- Must hold active membership in good standing with IUOE Local 793
- Valid DZ or AZ driver’s license in good standing, with a clean driver’s abstract.
- Thorough knowledge and experience operating a backhoe loader.
- Comfortable both operating the backhoe and driving the truck and moving between the two throughout the day.
- Experience with sewer and watermain repairs, service connections and/or restoration work
- Be able to accurately judge distance and slopes, and excavate carefully around existing services
- Good health and physical condition
- Sound organizational and communication skills, with attention to detail
- Works well in a small crew, both independently and collaboratively
- Is reliable, responsible, and trustworthy
Good to have:
- In-depth knowledge and practice of OHSA safety standards and regulations
- Experience responding to after-hours or emergency repair call-outs
Education Requirement:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
