Job Type: Full-time | Location: Fort Worth | Department: Technology | Work Location Type: #remote #hybrid
IREN is a vertically integrated AI Cloud provider, delivering large-scale data centers and GPU clusters for AI training and inference. IREN’s platform is underpinned by its expansive portfolio of grid-connected land and power in renewable-rich regions across North America, Europe and APAC.
With 100% renewable energy, we build, own and operate our data centers and take pride in being at the forefront of sustainable solutions for the ever-evolving applications of high-performance compute. We believe that human progress is invaluable, but it should be done in the right way – responsibly, sustainably and having a positive impact on the communities we operate in.
At the scale IREN operates, storage is a critical performance system. Every GPU in our clusters depends on data moving reliably, at speed and at volume. When storage falls short, AI training stalls, inference degrades and our customers feel it immediately.
The role of Senior Storage Engineers owns storage infrastructure end to end. This is a hands-on, deeply technical role. You will design and deploy storage systems, keep them performing under demanding AI workloads, and troubleshoot complex faults quickly and decisively when things go wrong.
The right person has spent years with their hands in large-scale storage environments. They know what good looks like, they know what failure looks like, and they know how to get from one to the other. They are comfortable working with significant autonomy, and they take personal ownership of production uptime.
- Seven or more years of hands-on storage engineering experience in production environments, with meaningful time spent operating storage at significant scale.
- A track record of deploying, operating and troubleshooting storage systems that serve demanding compute workloads.
- Experience working in or alongside data center environments; comfortable in the physical layer as well as the software layer.
- Prior exposure to the specific demands of AI training and inference I/O patterns is a strong advantage.
- Strong understanding of cloud platforms.
- Deep, practical knowledge of at least one major parallel or distributed file system used in high-performance environments.
- Strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with executive leadership, service providers and potentially members of the community
- Superior time management and multitasking skills with a strong sense of urgency
- Proven active listening and speaking skills
- Post secondary education in Computer Science or a related field.
- Design, build and commission high-performance storage systems that serve large GPU compute clusters, ensuring storage architecture meets the throughput and latency demands of AI training and inference workloads.
- Own the full operational lifecycle of storage infrastructure from initial deployment through day-to-day performance management, capacity growth and end-of-life planning.
- Manage and maintain storage networking fabrics connecting storage systems to GPU compute, ensuring the interconnect is never the bottleneck.
- Evaluate new storage hardware, software and approaches as the technology landscape evolves and IREN's footprint grows.
- Monitor storage system health, performance and capacity continuously; define meaningful thresholds and act on them before they become incidents.
- Tune storage systems for the specific I/O patterns of AI workloads and document what works.
- Plan and manage storage capacity proactively, working across teams to anticipate demand ahead of new cluster deployments.
- Maintain high availability across storage tiers; design and validate resilience mechanisms so that single points of failure are understood and mitigated.
- Diagnose and resolve storage incidents with urgency.
- Conduct thorough root cause analysis following significant incidents; produce clear write-ups and implement changes that prevent recurrence.
- Participate in on-call rotation to provide coverage for storage-related production issues; act as the escalation point for storage during major incidents.
- Work closely with technology and operations teams on new cluster builds, ensuring storage is ready and validated.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation that is accurate and current.
- Contribute to the technical evaluation of storage vendors and products; represent IREN's requirements clearly in vendor and partner conversations.
