Position Summary
The Director – Mortgage Underwriting oversees a team of mortgage underwriters responsible for evaluating and approving residential and/or commercial mortgage applications. This role ensures adherence to internal credit policies, regulatory requirements, and service level standards while maintaining high-quality underwriting decisions. The Director acts as both a subject matter expert and people leader—providing coaching, performance feedback, and process improvements to drive operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise, coach, and mentor a team of underwriters to achieve productivity, accuracy, and turnaround time targets.
- Review and sign off on complex or high-value loan applications beyond individual underwriter authority.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide feedback, and develop individual training plans.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the team.
Underwriting & Risk Management
- Ensure consistent and compliant underwriting decisions in line with company policies, investor guidelines, and regulatory frameworks.
- Review and interpret credit reports, income documentation, property appraisals, and other key borrower information to assess creditworthiness.
- Identify and escalate potential risks or exceptions, recommending appropriate mitigations.
- Maintain a strong focus on data integrity and audit readiness.
Process Improvement & Compliance
- Collaborate with management to streamline underwriting workflows and enhance automation or system efficiency.
- Monitor key performance metrics (turnaround time, approval rates, quality scores) and report trends or issues to leadership.
- Support internal and external audits, ensuring timely resolution of any findings.
- Stay updated on industry changes, lending regulations, and market trends to align team practices accordingly.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Experience: Minimum 8 years of mortgage underwriting experience, including 1–3 years in a team leadership or supervisory role, preferably in the private mortgage space

Expected Salary: $125-$165, mix of base and bonus
