Position Overview
We are expanding our team and looking for talented individuals who also add to our culture.
We're hiring a Principal UI/UX Designer to be the standard our design team is measured against. This is a senior individual-contributor role for someone whose judgment on a layout, a client trade-off, or a wireframe decision is trusted without a second opinion, and who uses that trust to raise the level of everyone else's work, not just their own. You'll lead our most complex client engagements end-to-end, review and sharpen other designers' work before it reaches a client, and sit alongside our CEO in early discovery to help shape direction before a project has a name.
What You’ll Do
- Own end-to-end design on our most complex web and mobile application projects, from wireframes through hi-fi UI to dev handoff, delivering to a PDM in sprint or waterfall workflows depending on the projects.
- Partner directly with our CEO in client discovery and whiteboarding sessions, helping shape early direction, scope, and approach before wireframing begins, not just executing from a finished brief.
- Present wireframe and design concepts rationale to clients, explain the "why" behind layout, hierarchy, aesthetic direction, and visual decisions section by section.
- Design logic, not just layouts, for product and application work, think through flows, states, and edge cases during wireframing, design, and work closely with Devs, QA and PDM.
- Handle client feedback with judgment, apply low-cost changes or those that genuinely strengthen the work, and push back constructively when a change will hurt the design or the build, explaining the trade-offs and letting the client make the final call.
- Maintain a real design system for our long-standing client; for tighter agency engagements, deliver a focused style guide (typography, colour, CTA states, motion guidance) that's sufficient for a clean build.
- Lead Visual QA across desktop, tablet, and mobile, flag the details (spacing, type, line height, nav-on-scroll, sticky CTAs, hover states) in tickets, and responsive behaviour clearly (designing tablet screens, or specifying how sections should stack or restructure between breakpoints).
- Set and model design quality standards for the team, through review, example, and informal mentorship, without formal people-management responsibility.
What You Bring
- 10+ years of experience in web, UI and UX design, with a track record of being the senior-most design voice on high-complexity engagements
- 2-3 years in a start-up or agency environment
- A strong portfolio of web work showcasing: end-to-end case studies, live websites, landing pages, responsive design, UI components
- Proven experience with accurate time estimation and creating quality work within time constraints
- Demonstrated experience reviewing and elevating other designers' wireframes and UI work
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to speak and present the “why” behind design decisions to both internal and external stakeholders (including design impact on development and how design decisions align with business goals and user needs)
- Proven efficiency in performing visual QA
- Knowledge of information architecture diagrams
- History of mentoring and coaching more junior designers
Nice to Have
- Experience in visual and interaction design (animations/motion design and micro-interactions)
- Data analysis experience (heatmaps, A/B testing, Google Analytics)
- Ability to create clean working HTML/CSS from design files
- Experience in Axure & After Effects or other related tools
- Experience doing customer interviews
Who You Are
- A self-starter with the ability to multitask and manage various tasks in a fast-paced environment
- An unwavering pursuit of the “why” behind every ask and decision
- Possess a tenacious "can-do" attitude, always willing to go the extra mile to ensure the success of your team
- An amicable personality and charisma that pairs well with team and client-facing positions
- Have a growth mindset, and is eager to learn and pivot to what is best for the client and product
- Highly organized and consistent, with strong attention to detail and an ability to manage time, take precise notes, and follow through expertly
