Key Purpose
The Registered Nurse – Education, Outreach & Projects is a multifaceted nursing position that supports staff education and professional development, community palliative-care outreach, clinical practice, and identified organizational initiatives.
The focus of the position will evolve as temporary staffing needs are resolved, with education, community palliative-care outreach and organizational improvement forming the longer-term focus of the role.
Key Responsibilities
Education & Staff Development
The RN will coordinate and support staff education and professional development to strengthen evidence-informed palliative and end-of-life care.
Responsibilities include:
- Assess educational needs of nursing and interdisciplinary staff.
- Maintain an annual education plan.
- Plan, coordinate and deliver education related to palliative and end-of-life care.
- Support orientation and onboarding of new clinical staff.
- Develop and maintain educational resources, tools and materials.
- Support clinical competency development and assessment.
- Identify education opportunities arising from clinical trends, quality indicators, staff feedback and organizational priorities.
- Coordinate mandatory and recommended clinical education.
- Facilitate case review, reflective practice and knowledge sharing.
- Evaluate education initiatives and recommend opportunities for improvement.
- Collaborate with external educators and healthcare organizations as appropriate.
Areas of education may include symptom and pain management, end-of-life communication, medication management, grief and bereavement, advance care planning, ethical issues, documentation, comfort care and other palliative-care competencies.
Community Palliative Care & Education
The RN will support Red Deer Hospice’s efforts to strength palliative care knowledge, awareness, and connection within the healthcare community.
Responsibilities include:
- Support the development and implementation of community palliative-care outreach initiatives.
- Identify educational needs and opportunities within the healthcare community.
- Develop and deliver palliative-care education for healthcare professionals and other appropriate audiences.
- Develop outreach resources and educational materials.
- Build collaborative relationships with healthcare providers and organizations relevant to palliative-care education and access.
- Participate in appropriate community meetings, presentations and educational opportunities.
- Track participation and outcomes to support evaluation and future program development.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of Red Deer Hospice's community palliative-care outreach approach.
As the position evolves, community palliative care outreach and program development will become the most significant component of the role.
Organizational Projects & Transitional Support
The RN will contribute to identified organizational initiatives and provide flexible project support based on operational priorities.
Responsibilities may include:
- Support quality-improvement and organizational projects.
- Participate in committees, working groups, accreditation activities and other identified initiatives.
- Assist with development, review and implementation of policies, procedures and practice resources.
- Support data collection, evaluation and documentation related to organizational initiatives.
- Coordinate assigned project timelines, meetings, action items and deliverables.
- Identify potential barriers or delays and bring them forward to the appropriate project lead.
- Support other time-limited projects identified by the Executive Director.
During temporary staffing absences, this portfolio may include defined operational support for fundraising, educational, community and mission-based events under the direction of the Community Partnership Manager. This may include maintaining timelines and planning documents; coordinating assigned logistics with staff, volunteers and vendors; supporting registration, materials, meetings and event-day requirements; and assisting with post-event documentation and evaluation.
Donor relationships, sponsorship development, fundraising strategy and community partnership ownership remain with the Community Partnership Manager.
RN Clinical Support
The position will provide RN-level clinical support while day-to-day clinical leadership and care coordination remain with the Care Team Manager and Care Team Lead.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide RN clinical support in accordance with applicable legislation, professional standards and Red Deer Hospice policies.
- Maintain RN capacity required under organizational funding requirements.
- Provide clinical consultation within the RN scope of practice when additional RN expertise is required.
- Support assessment and management of complex clinical situations.
- Participate in resident/client care planning and clinical review as appropriate.
- Promote safe, evidence-informed palliative-care practice.
- Escalate clinical concerns appropriately and collaborate with clinical leadership regarding resident/client needs.
- Participate in clinical quality and safety initiatives as required.
This position is not intended to replace or duplicate the responsibilities of the Care Team Manager or Care Team Lead.
Quality Improvement & Strategic Initiatives
The RN will contribute to organizational quality improvement and strategic initiatives as assigned.
Responsibilities may include:
- Supporting quality improvement projects.
- Participating in organizational committees and working groups.
- Assisting with the development, review and implementation of policies, procedures and practice resources.
- Supporting data collection and evaluation of quality initiatives.
- Identifying opportunities for practice improvement.
- Participating in accreditation and quality-readiness activities as appropriate.
- Supporting implementation of organizational strategic priorities.
- Assisting with special projects identified by the Executive Director.

Qualifications
Required
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Alberta and in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Demonstrated experience in palliative care, hospice care, community nursing or a related clinical setting.
- Demonstrated ability to provide clinical consultation and support to an interdisciplinary team.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Demonstrated organizational and project management abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver education to healthcare professionals and/or community audiences.
- Strong computer and documentation skills.
Preferred
- Experience/education working in a hospice or palliative care environment.
- Experience in staff education, clinical education or professional development.
- Experience developing or implementing community outreach programs.
- Experience with quality improvement initiatives.
- Experience with project management, fundraising events or community engagement.
