Residential Designer / Drafter (must live in Saskatoon or surrounding area) — Building Storeys
Are you a creative thinker who also loves the technical side of buildings?
Building Storeys is looking for an experienced Residential Designer / Drafter to join our growing little team.
We design homes, cabins, additions, garages, suites and other residential spaces throughout Saskatchewan. Our work sits at the intersection of good design, building science, code, creativity, art and functionality. We believe a building should also be beautiful, work with surrounding landscape, smart, functional and a well-built one.
I'm looking for someone who can take an idea and run with it — someone who enjoys solving problems, understands how buildings actually go together, and gets excited about turning a sketch or a client's vision into a thoughtful, buildable design.
What you'll be doing
- Residential design and drafting using AutoCAD
- Developing preliminary designs and construction drawings
- Producing 3D models and renderings to help clients visualize their projects
- Navigating the National Building Code / Saskatchewan building requirements
- Working with energy code and building-science requirements
- Reviewing and applying municipal zoning bylaws
- Helping with permit drawings and navigating the permit process
- Researching code and finding practical solutions when things aren't straightforward
- Working through design challenges and figuring out how to make a project work
- Communicating ideas visually and technically
- Collaborating with me throughout the design and drafting process
The person I'm looking for
Education:
- Diploma in Architectural Technologies or Engineering Technologies
- I would consider a diploma Interior Design, but you must have an extensive knowledge of the building code and construction detailing.
You don't need to know everything — but you do need to know how to find the answer.
You are:
- Experienced in residential drafting and design
- Confident using AutoCAD
- Comfortable reading and interpreting building codes
- Familiar with zoning bylaws and development requirements
- Comfortable with energy-code requirements and building science
- Able to produce quality renderings / visualizations
- Detail-oriented without losing sight of the bigger picture
- A creative problem solver
- Comfortable working independently
- Curious and willing to keep learning
- A good communicator
- Positive, kind and solutions-oriented
Most importantly, you actually like buildings.
You like figuring out why something works — and why it doesn't. You notice proportion, light, materials and how a space feels. You appreciate good design, but you also understand that a building has to work in the real world.
I want someone who enjoys creating things and has an appreciation for working with the natural environment rather than against it — designing homes that are comfortable, efficient, durable and connected to the place they're built.
The position
This will start as a casual, part-time position with the potential to grow as the business grows.
- Work from home. Must live in Saskatoon or surrounding area. I will require meeting clients and meetings in Saskatoon area.
- Flexible hours
- Saskatchewan-based
- Casual to start
- Hours will vary depending on projects
- Opportunity for more hours and responsibility as we build the right working relationship
This isn't a huge corporate design firm.
It's a small, creative business where your ideas matter, you'll have a voice in the design process, and you'll work directly with me and our clients.
If you're someone who can look at a problem and think “Okay, how can we make this work?” rather than “That's not possible,” I'd love to hear from you.
Please send me your resume, a little bit about yourself, and examples of your work/portfolio.
I'd especially love to see residential projects you've worked on — drawings, renderings, design work, or anything else that shows me how you think.
