Nielsen Country Farms is seeking a reliable, hardworking, and trustworthy Farm Hand to oversee and take care of the farm’s animals and assist with the restoration, security and maintenance of properties.
Located approximately 20 minutes north of Edmonton, AB, this is an excellent opportunity for an experienced individual who takes pride in their work, enjoys a hands-on rural lifestyle, and understands the commitment required in undertaking a daily routine on an ongoing basis.
The Role
This is a practical, hands-on position requiring someone who is physically fit and willing to undertake their duties with minimal supervision. Duties will include daily horse care, general farm chores, equipment operation, fencing, mechanical work, property maintenance, repairs, and other farm projects.
The successful candidate must be comfortable with physical work, early mornings, changing priorities, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
On-site Accommodation
On-site accommodation is provided as part of the position. Accommodation details and terms will be discussed during the hiring process.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for managing the health care and well being of the horses (29) both individually and in a closed herd.
- Provide daily feeding, watering, stable and paddock cleaning, routine checks, following biosecurity and safety protocols.
- Daily socializing/handling of horses in terms of refresh in haltering, leading, grooming, standing for veterinary procedures and farrier etc.
- Provide updates to the farm owners on a regular basis and identify any issues and/or challenges accordingly.
- Safely operate farm equipment and machinery that includes skid steers, tractors & trailers.
- Handle round bales and assist with haying.
- Install, maintain, and repair farm fencing including gates.
- Assist with farm maintenance including waterers, repairs, renovations, and construction projects.
- Troubleshoot basic mechanical issues and perform routine equipment maintenance.
- Take on a variety of farm projects and odd jobs as required.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and well-kept work environment.
- Operate equipment and perform all duties in a safe and responsible manner.
Qualifications & Experience
- 10+ years of horsemanship and husbandry experience, with a strong understanding of daily care, handling and management.
- Horsemanship experience including nutrition, diet related interventions, hoof care and trimming, and treatment of injuries.
- Trainer qualifications and/or knowledge and experience in training is considered an asset.
- Interest and experience with the specialized care of older horses is preferred.
- Interest in the care of mini horses (five) is considered an asset.
- Experience operating farm machinery and equipment.
- Experience in horse trailering, loading and unloading of animals is preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and practical troubleshooting skills.
- Proven experience installing and repairing fencing.
- Experience with farm maintenance, construction, renovations, or repairs is an asset.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position, including lifting, handling materials, and working around farm equipment.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Relevant equipment-operation experience is an asset.
