SUMMARY:
The Mechanical Systems Technician is a hands-on production and field-installation position responsible for assembling, fitting, aligning, testing, troubleshooting, servicing, and installing the mechanical systems used throughout complete cyclotron systems. The work includes magnet assemblies, vacuum chambers and components, RF resonators, injection systems, beamlines, target stations, transfer systems, water-cooling circuits, support structures, and related equipment. The successful candidate will work from mechanical drawings, bills of material, and assembly procedures, support Factory Acceptance Testing, and travel internationally to assist with installation, Site Acceptance Testing, commissioning, service, and maintenance at customer sites. This is not primarily a desk-based or general building-maintenance role.
What You'll Do:
- Assemble complete cyclotron mechanical systems, including magnet components, vacuum assemblies, RF resonators, injection systems, beamlines, target stations, transfer systems, cooling circuits, support structures, and related equipment according to approved drawings and workmanship standards.
- Perform precision mechanical fitting and assembly, including measuring, layout, drilling, tapping, reaming, deburring, pinning, fastening, torquing, mounting, and final adjustment of components and subassemblies.
- Read and follow mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, tolerances, bills of material, work instructions, and technical procedures.
- Use calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, height gauges, torque tools, levels, and laser-alignment equipment to verify dimensions, alignment, fit, and assembly quality.
- Assemble vacuum chambers, flanges, valves, pumps, feedthroughs, seals, O-rings, and gaskets; apply appropriate cleanliness and handling practices for vacuum-service components.
- Assemble RF resonators and other precision copper, stainless-steel, and mechanical components while protecting sealing surfaces, finished surfaces, and critical features.
- Install tubing, piping, hoses, fittings, valves, cooling-water circuits, and pneumatic components; perform pressure, flow, and leak checks as required.
- Assemble and align beamline components, magnets, diagnostics, supports, and related hardware using approved reference points and alignment methods.
- Inspect, test, troubleshoot, adjust, and repair mechanical systems during assembly, Factory Acceptance Testing, installation, commissioning, service, and maintenance.
- Disassemble completed systems, identify and protect components, preserve critical surfaces and vacuum parts, and prepare mechanical equipment for packing and shipment.
- Travel to customer sites to reinstall, fit, align, and test equipment and support local contractors, customer tradespeople, Site Acceptance Testing, commissioning, service, and maintenance.
- Maintain accurate assembly, inspection, repair, alignment, and test records; document deficiencies, provide red-line markups, and interact with ERP and Microsoft Office systems as required.
- Work closely with Production, Engineering, managers, installers, and other technical specialists to support project completion and provide practical feedback that improves manufacturability, lead time, functionality, and installation efficiency.
- Follow company safety procedures, approved lifting and rigging practices, quality-control requirements, cleanliness controls, and workmanship standards, and assist with other related production activities as assigned.
What You'll Bring:
- Certificate or diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Mechanics/Millwright, Aircraft Maintenance or Structures, Mechanical Assembly, or an equivalent combination of technical training and hands-on experience.
- Practical experience assembling precision machinery, OEM equipment, aerospace systems, vacuum equipment, industrial machinery, or comparable complex mechanical systems.
- Strong ability to read and interpret mechanical and assembly drawings, tolerances, bills of material, work instructions, and technical procedures.
- Experience using hand and power tools, drills, taps, reamers, torque tools, calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, levels, and other precision measuring and alignment equipment.
- Working knowledge of precision fitting, mechanical alignment, fasteners, seals and O-rings, vacuum-system cleanliness, tubing and piping, cooling-water circuits, and pneumatic components.
- Strong attention to detail and a consistent approach to cleanliness, fit, alignment, torque requirements, inspection, documentation, and safe work practices.
- Ability to organize priorities, solve technical problems, work independently with limited supervision, and contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary production and engineering team.
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Experience with medical or nuclear equipment, aerospace systems, vacuum systems, particle accelerators, welding or fabrication, or other complex industrial equipment is an asset.
Work Environment:
- This is an in-person, hands-on production position based at ACSI's current facility in Richmond, B.C. ACSI is planning to relocate its operations to South Surrey in early 2028.
- Work is performed in production, assembly, testing, and machine-shop areas where required personal protective equipment must be worn.
- Priorities may change to support production schedules, Factory Acceptance Testing, shipments, and customer-site requirements.
- International travel to customer sites is required. The successful candidate must hold a valid passport and be able to travel abroad for installation, commissioning, service, and maintenance assignments.
