We are a growing boutique personal injury law firm in Markham, Ontario, seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented Accident Benefits Legal Assistant / Law Clerk to join our team. This is a full-time, one-year contract position covering an employee leave.
You will work closely with a senior Paralegal on a busy Accident Benefits practice, taking ownership of files and playing a key role in moving claims forward efficiently and effectively. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys responsibility, client contact, and complex SABS work in a supportive, small-firm environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day support to a senior Paralegal and assist in proactively driving files forward.
- Liaise with clients, insurance adjusters, treatment providers, and other stakeholders in a professional and courteous manner.
- Complete and review all OCF forms in accordance with the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS).
- Communicate with insurers to ensure clients receive all benefits to which they are entitled under the SABS.
- Draft clear, professional correspondence to insurance companies, medical institutions, defence counsel, and clients.
- Conduct and document client interviews; prepare, review, and organize all related AB documentation.
- Track and manage due dates, limitation periods, LAT deadlines, and other time-sensitive steps.
- Schedule and coordinate client meetings, insurer examinations, medical assessments, LAT hearings and case conferences, and maintain the firm calendar.
- Handle productions, assemble briefs, draft LAT applications and related materials.
- Assist with final accounts, closing letters, and overall file wrap-up.
- Maintain both physical and electronic files in pristine order and keep internal systems updated.
- Perform other administrative and practice support tasks as needed to ensure smooth file flow.
About You – Skills & Experience
- 2+ years of Accident Benefits experience strongly preferred, with working knowledge of the SABS and the LAT process.
- Completion of a Legal Assistant or Law Clerk diploma (or equivalent experience).
- Demonstrated success in a fast-paced, high-volume practice, ideally managing 200+ files of varying complexity.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, exercise sound judgment, and bring strong critical-thinking skills to problem-solving.
- Confident, dependable, and proactive, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a small, collaborative team.
- Strong technical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfort learning new practice management systems.
- Exceptional organization and time-management skills, with a keen eye for detail.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including professional client-facing communication.
- Strong commitment to client service and an interest in personal injury and injury-related litigation.
