Full-Stack Engineer (Senior)
Location: Toronto, ON, Canada (Remote, Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area only)
Employment Type: Full-Time
Seniority Level: Senior. 7+ years of professional full-stack development experience required.
About the Role
TurboVets modernizes the entire military lifecycle, from service to civilian success, in one unified platform. Built by veterans and technologists with firsthand experience navigating military systems, we support veterans, active service members, military recruits, and individuals transitioning into civilian life. We value honesty, autonomy, and collaboration, and build scalable systems that solve real problems and have measurable impact.
We're looking for a Full-Stack Engineer who takes ownership end-to-end, from system design through deployment. You'll turn real-world operational needs, often from military and government stakeholders, into secure, scalable, reliable software that replaces legacy platforms and modernizes how critical services are delivered. Your code runs in mission-critical environments where quality, security, and performance are non-negotiable. This is a senior role with real influence: you'll collaborate closely with product, design, and engineering to ship features that matter, not tickets that disappear into a backlog.
Tech Stack
- Frontend: Angular, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS
- Backend: NestJS, Node.js, Apollo GraphQL, REST APIs
- Data: PostgreSQL
- DevOps: Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions
- Auth & Security: OAuth 2.0, JWT, SSO, RBAC
- Messaging / Eventing: Redis (and other event-driven patterns)
Responsibilities
Backend
- Architect and develop scalable backend services using NestJS, Node.js, and TypeScript
- Design and maintain GraphQL (Apollo Federation) and REST APIs
- Model and optimize relational databases
- Implement authentication, authorization, and RBAC patterns
- Build microservices and event-driven systems using Redis and related tooling
- Collaborate with DevOps on CI/CD, containerization, and infrastructure decisions
Frontend
- Build responsive, accessible UIs using Angular (or equivalent frameworks)
- Translate product and design requirements into maintainable client-side architecture
- Manage complex state using RxJS, Angular Signals, or similar patterns
- Optimize performance and ensure usability across devices
Cross-Functional
- Own features from planning through production
- Collaborate with designers, product managers, and stakeholders
- Review code, mentor engineers, and influence technical direction
- Write and maintain documentation for APIs, architecture, and internal tooling
- Implement and maintain unit and integration tests
What You'll Work On
TurboVets builds software that supports the full military lifecycle, from recruitment and active service through transition into civilian life. You'll work on products spanning career development, financial wellness, secure records, and the modernization of legacy government systems.
Qualifications
Required
- 7+ years of professional full-stack development experience
- 3+ years working with NestJS, TypeScript, and GraphQL
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Strong database design and query optimization skills (PostgreSQL preferred)
- Production experience with Angular, React, or comparable frontend frameworks
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines
- Strong communication skills and comfort working autonomously in a remote environment
Bonus
- Experience with monorepo architectures (Nx or similar)
- gRPC, WebSockets
- Serverless platforms (AWS Lambda, Azure Functions)
- CQRS, DDD, or event-sourced systems
- Observability and performance tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, load testing, rate limiting)
Who You Are
- You take ownership without waiting to be asked, and you're comfortable making the call when the path forward isn't obvious.
- You communicate clearly with engineers and non-technical stakeholders alike, and you don't let technical decisions get buried in jargon.
- You care about the mission. Building tools that make a real difference for veterans and service members isn't just a footnote to you.
