Reporting to the Dean of Arts, the Theatre Production and Technical Coordinator provides comprehensive technical leadership, production management, and design expertise for the Drama Program and the Al and Trish Huehn Theatre. This role coordinates all design and technical aspects of academic coursework and theatrical productions in collaboration with the Department Chair. Additionally, the position provides essential technical support for internal and external campus events in the theatre. The incumbent plays a vital role in ensuring the successful, safe delivery of Drama academic programming and public-facing events at CUE.
Responsibilities:
Theatre Operations & Technical Management
- Manage and maintain all technical audio, visual, and lighting equipment within the Theatre and scenic shop, coordinating upgrades.

Supervise the correct, safe, and appropriate use of all theatre spaces and technical equipment by students, faculty, and external user groups.

Coordinate with Conference Services to provide seamless technical support for internal and external theatre rentals, including the oversight of contracted external technicians.

Coordinate and oversee the maintenance, inventory, and lifecycle management of theatre equipment.
Production Management & Design
- Oversee production management for all mainstage and studio productions within the Drama Program.

Coordinate production designs (including set, lighting, sound, props, costume, and video) for productions.

Collaborate / produce design elements in consultation with the Chair, Fine Arts (e.g., set and lights).

Provide guidance to temporary/guest designers and technicians for productions and special events.
Academic & Student Support
- Provide guidance and supervision for work-integrated learning opportunities based on technical expertise.

Support the day-to-day technical and space requirements of all drama academic classes.
Financial & Administrative Duties
- Collaborate with the Chair, Fine Arts, to develop, manage, and monitor production budgets.

Track production expenditures, including procurement of supplies, equipment, and reconciliation of the unit credit card.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Develop, implement, and enforce Health and Safety standards, hazard assessments, and mitigation protocols within the scope of the job duties, ensuring compliance with institutional and industry guidelines and legislative requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Technical Theatre Proficiency: Expert knowledge of theatrical set construction, standard power/pneumatic tools, drafting, construction drawings, and Scenic painting techniques.
Lighting & Sound Engineering: Proficient in electrical loads, DMX protocols, hang/focus, and programming on an ETC Ion lighting console; experienced in live audio mixing (Yamaha TF3) and audio cue creation.
Digital Media & Systems: Proficient in industry-standard software including but not limited to Autodesk-AutoCAD, Figure53-QLab, Sound Forge, Audacity, and the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, Acrobat). Strong command of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
Design Versatility: Proven capability and facility in at least three theatrical design disciplines (set, lighting, sound, video, props, or costume).
Safety Leadership: Thorough knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) best practices and industry standards.
Interpersonal & Management Skills: Strong communication, conflict mitigation, and resolution skills; ability to manage student group dynamics and assign tasks appropriate to a student's physical or cognitive abilities.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Theatre or equivalent discipline, is required.

Demonstration of progressive equivalent experience may be considered.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in technical direction and production management within a professional setting is required.

Experience in a post-secondary setting is preferred.

Proven design experience in a professional or post-secondary environment is preferred.

Current Standard First Aid Certification is required.

Mental Health First Aid Certification is preferred.

Ability to pass a clear criminal record check is required
Working Conditions:
Hours: Fulltime position with an averaging work agreement.
Physical Demands: This position requires a high degree of physical activity (approx. 50% physical work, 45% desk work, 5% instructional support). Must be capable of lifting up to 50 lbs vertically overhead and at horizontal extension from the shoulder, working on ladders, and operating machinery.
Work Locations: Shared across the Scenic Shop (Ralph King Athletics Centre), the Al and Trish Huehn Theatre, Tegler Student Centre, designated classrooms, and the Greenroom office.
