Barnburner Hockey Academy is looking for energetic, knowledgeable and reliable Hockey Skills Coaches to join our player development team. For an exceptional candidate, this position can grow into a regular part-time or full-time role combining hockey coaching with program development, hockey operations and business strategy.
We work with hockey players ranging from young beginners to competitive and elite athletes, helping them improve their skating mechanics, shooting, puck skills, strength, conditioning and overall hockey performance.
Our coaches work in a unique hockey development environment that includes skating treadmills, dedicated shooting lanes, video and technology-assisted training, a fully equipped gym, and on-ice training opportunities.
We have opportunities for coaches at different stages of their coaching careers. Whether you are an experienced hockey coach or a former/current competitive player interested in developing your coaching skills, we would be interested in hearing from you.
What You'll Do
Depending upon your experience and areas of expertise, responsibilities may include:
- Coach individual players, small groups and teams in shooting, stickhandling and puck skills
- Teach and correct forward skating mechanics, stride technique, acceleration and skating efficiency using our skating treadmills
- Provide clear, constructive and age-appropriate feedback to players
- Lead or assist with dryland, strength, conditioning, speed and agility training
- Coach players during camps, clinics, team training sessions and specialized development programs
- Conduct player assessments and help identify areas for improvement
- Use video and other training technology to help players understand and improve their technique
- Assist in developing drills, progressions and standardized coaching programs
- Create a positive, challenging and enjoyable training environment
- Maintain a strong focus on player safety and proper use of training equipment
- Communicate professionally with players, parents, other coaches and Barnburner staff
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will have some combination of:
- Experience playing competitive hockey
- Hockey coaching, skills instruction or player-development experience
- Strong understanding of skating, shooting and general hockey fundamentals
- Ability to demonstrate and explain hockey skills effectively
- Strong communication skills and an ability to connect with young athletes
- Reliable, punctual and professional approach
- Positive attitude and genuine interest in helping athletes improve
- Ability to work independently while also contributing to a coaching team
NCCP certification, kinesiology or sports-performance education, personal-training experience, skating instruction, strength and conditioning experience, and First Aid/CPR certification are considered assets but are not required for every candidate.
Experience coaching on a skating treadmill is also an asset, although training will be provided.
Because our coaches work with children and youth, successful candidates should also be prepared to complete any background screening required by Barnburner.
Schedule
This is initially a part-time/casual position, with shifts based on player bookings, programs and facility needs.
Most coaching takes place:
- Weekdays from approximately 3:30 p.m. onward
- Saturdays and Sundays
- School holidays, PA Days and summer periods may provide additional daytime opportunities
The position is particularly well suited to university/college students, current or former competitive hockey players, teachers, trainers, kinesiology students/graduates, or experienced coaches looking for flexible additional coaching hours.
