We are looking for a hands-on electrical engineering specialist to lead the electronics and data-integration side of our sensor platform. This role is focused on sensor readout, circuit design, microcontroller integration, data logging, communication interfaces, and API connectivity. The role does not require sensor fabrication expertise, but the candidate must be able to interface custom sensor elements with electronics and convert raw sensor signals into usable digital data.
Role Overview
The Postdoctoral Fellow – Sensor Integration & Embedded Systems will be responsible for designing and testing the electronics architecture that connects Sentai’s sensor elements to microcontrollers, data loggers, wireless communication modules, and software systems. The person will work closely with the sensor fabrication/materials team and AI/data team to ensure that sensor signals are measured accurately, logged reliably, and transferred into usable formats for analysis, dashboards, APIs, and future AI workflows.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build electronic circuits for reading sensor signals from resistive, capacitive, voltage-output, current-output, or impedance-based sensors.
- Develop sensor interface circuits, including voltage dividers, bridge circuits, amplifiers, filters, ADC interfaces, and signal-conditioning circuits.
- Build prototype sensor nodes for humidity, temperature, pressure, moisture, and other environmental signals.
- Develop embedded firmware for sensor reading, calibration, timestamping, averaging, filtering, and data transmission.
- Create simple APIs or connect sensor nodes to existing APIs using tools such as FastAPI, MQTT, HTTP, REST, or WebSocket-based communication.
- Prepare clean sensor datasets for analysis, visualization, dashboarding, and AI/ML workflows.
- Troubleshoot sensor-electronics integration problems, including noisy signals, unstable baselines, grounding issues, wiring errors, communication failures, and power-supply problems.
Required Background
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related field.
- Practical experience with circuit design, sensor readout, and microcontroller-based prototyping.
- Strong understanding of analog and digital electronics.
- Experience working with sensors, embedded systems, data acquisition, or IoT devices.
Required Technical Skills
- Circuit design for sensor signal acquisition.
- Analog electronics: voltage dividers, op-amps, filters, ADCs, impedance measurement, noise reduction, grounding, and shielding.
- Digital electronics: GPIO, logic levels, pull-up/pull-down resistors, I²C, SPI, UART, USB, and serial communication.
- Microcontrollers: ESP32, Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi Pico, or similar.
- Firmware development in C/C++, Arduino IDE, MicroPython, or CircuitPython.
- Data logging using CSV, SD cards, serial output, local servers, databases, or cloud tools.
- Basic Python programming for sensor data handling, plotting, and API interaction.
- Familiarity with REST APIs, FastAPI, MQTT, HTTP requests, or similar communication methods.
- Ability to use lab tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, LCR meters, power supplies, and soldering equipment.
- Ability to read datasheets and select suitable components for sensor-interface circuits.
Pay: $50.00-$60.00 per year
