About the Opportunity
The College is seeking a full-time paralegal to join the College’s complaints and investigations department in a hybrid work environment. The College’s office is located in Richmond, B.C.
In this role, you will report to the Director of Complaints and Investigations, and Legal Counsel (Director) and support the College in carrying out all aspects of work related to the administration of the College’s complaints and investigations processes.
Key responsibilities include:
· Maintaining an in-depth knowledge of the Veterinarians Act and the College’s bylaws, standards, and policies in relation to complaints and investigations.
· Providing administrative oversight and management of case files from start to finish with minimal supervision.
· Communicating with registrants, complainants, and the public regarding the College’s complaints and investigations processes.
· Reviewing and sorting complaints received by the College.
· Drafting issues for investigation for the Director to review.
· Providing administrative support to the Investigation Committee.
· Ensuring the diligent progression of case files and following up on deadlines.
· Ensuring completeness of digital files.
· Providing administrative support to inspectors in conducting investigations, including reviewing and editing inspector memorandums to the Investigation Committee.
· Assisting in preparing meeting agendas for the Investigation Committee including compiling, redacting and editing documents.
· Drafting correspondence, memorandums, and other documents in accordance with the College’s templates and procedures.
· Attending Investigation Committee meetings and preparing minutes of the meetings.
· Assisting with drafting disposition letters, including drafting consent agreements.
· Providing assistance in monitoring compliance with consent agreements.
· Assisting with preparing files for document disclosure for discipline matters or freedom of information requests.
· Maintaining and updating the College’s templates, tables, indexes, spreadsheets, and databases.
· Assisting with the development and implementation of policies and procedures to promote transparency, objectivity, impartiality, and fairness with the College’s investigation practices.
· Collaborating with and providing support to the complaints department to facilitate the complaints and investigation process.
· Tasks that may be assigned by the Registrar, Deputy Registrars, or Director from time to time that are necessary to support the College’s public protection mandate.
About You
To qualify, you must have a paralegal certificate or diploma and possess a minimum of 3 to 5 years of recent work experience in a paralegal role. You must have excellent organizational and communication skills, and possess critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. You must be demonstrably experienced and knowledgeable in, and capable of, working collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced environment with a high case load. Experience in the regulatory sector is desirable, and experience in professional regulation is preferred.
Additionally, meaningful knowledge, skills, and experience in the following will be highly valued:
· Knowledge of and interest in public protection.
· Solid working knowledge of administrative law principles and procedural fairness.
· Experience with supporting regulatory investigations.
· Conducting risk assessments and employing risk-based decision making.
· Experience with recording minutes of meetings.
· Advanced technology skills including proficiency with Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Pro, and experience with SharePoint and OneDrive.
· Experience handling highly sensitive information including personal, confidential, and privileged information.
· Experience with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
· Managing a bring forward system.
· Experience with trauma-informed practices.
About the Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $65,000 – $78,000, plus the following:
