The College of Complementary Health Professionals of BC (CCHPBC, or the College) is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. The College regulates over 13,000 health professionals, including chiropractors, massage therapists, naturopathic physicians, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, and acupuncturists across British Columbia.
Formed on June 28, 2024, through the amalgamation of four provincial health profession regulators, the College was established as part of the Ministry of Health’s initiative to modernize the health profession regulatory framework in B.C. Its primary role is to protect public health and safety by licensing and regulating health professionals and the settings in which they practice. This includes ensuring that every health professional within its purview is fully qualified to provide safe and ethical care.
About This Employment Opportunity
Reporting to the Director, Legal Services, the Paralegal supports the department’s Legal Counsel, exercising a wide range of paralegal skills, providing administrative support to the Executive Director and Legal Counsel, and conducting legal research. In addition, as Privacy Coordinator, the Paralegal supports the College’s Privacy Officer (Legal Counsel) in administering the College’s programs for information access and privacy protection.
All College staff contribute to a public protection mandate, delivering efficient and responsive services that align with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) and broader commitments to reconciliation, while supporting the College in meeting its regulatory, strategic, and operational goals.
Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)
- Provide paralegal support to the Legal Counsel.
- Conduct legal research.
- Communicate with external parties, including external legal counsel.
- Prepare materials for review by Executive Director and the Legal Counsel.
- Provide paralegal and administrative support to the Legal Counsel in responding to requests under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA).
- Assist with the preparation of legal memoranda and briefing notes.
- Prepare and draft legal correspondence, procedural documents, briefing materials, agreements, and other legal documents for review by Legal Counsel.
- Coordinate with staff across College departments.
- Work with the Records Management Advisor to ensure storage and retention of various types of records are compliant with the Health Professions Act (HPA), the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA), the FOIPPA, and the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA)
- Other duties as assigned by the Director, Legal Services.
Qualifications and Skills
- Graduate of a recognized paralegal program.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a paralegal.
- Experience with health profession regulation an asset.
- Experience in litigation and/or corporate law would be an asset.
- Knowledge of health profession regulation and an understanding of the relevant legislation, including the HPA, the HPOA, the FOIPPA, and PIPA.
- Awareness of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) and Action Plan and their application to the work at CCHPBC.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication.
- Tech savvy with excellent working knowledge of cloud computing systems and Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion of information received while performing work functions.
- Demonstrated ability to work productively within a team but also independently.
- Organized and detail oriented.
- Collaborative spirit with a passion for fostering regulatory excellence.
An individual who meets either the established formal qualification or the accepted equivalency can be considered equally for this role.
Compensation and Perks
The compensation for this position ranges from $61,569 to $80,000 annually, based on a 37.5-hour work week. The starting salary will be determined by factors such as the candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, experience, the salaries of peers within the same range, market conditions, and other relevant considerations.
CCHPBC offers a competitive compensation package, including health and dental benefits, employee assistance program, and paid time-off package. This role requires a minimum of three (3) in-office days per week, with priority given to designated team collaboration days. Work-from-home arrangements are dependent on operational requirements. Additionally, this role may occasionally require the incumbent to work outside of normal office hours.
