Job Description: Facility Maintenance Specialist
Department: Maintenance
Location: All Sites (Dartmouth/Halifax)
Employment Type: Full-time with on call duties as required
Pay Rate: $26.00/hour
Position Summary
The Facility Maintenance Specialist is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and general upkeep of multiple shelter and supported housing facilities across both organizations. Working across assigned sites, the incumbent performs a broad range of facility maintenance, handyman, landscaping and other related functions to ensure buildings, grounds, equipment, and systems remain safe, functional, and welcoming for residents, staff, and visitors.
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility. The role serves as a skilled facilities generalist, responding to maintenance needs as assigned, addressing building deficiencies, coordinating specialized contractors as requested, and supporting the organization's commitment to safe and well-maintained housing environments.
Key Responsibilities
Facility Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform routine and emergency maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting activities across multiple facilities.
- Complete carpentry, painting, drywall, flooring, hardware, and general building repairs.
- Conduct minor plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs within the scope of training and applicable regulations.
- Install, assemble, repair, and maintain fixtures, furnishings, equipment, and building components.
- Complete basic lawn and garden maintenance as required.
- Complete snow removal as required.
Building Safety and Operations
- Conduct regular inspections of facilities to identify maintenance needs, safety concerns, and operational issues.
- Take corrective action to address hazards and ensure compliance with applicable health, safety, and building standards.
- Support fire safety, security, accessibility, and emergency preparedness requirements.
- Maintain grounds, exterior areas, and common spaces as required to ensure safety
- Respond to maintenance requests in a timely manner and prioritize work according to urgency and risk.
Preventive Maintenance
- Participate in the development and implementation of preventive maintenance schedules.
- Maintain maintenance records, work logs, and related documentation.
- Monitor the condition of building systems and recommend repairs or replacements as required.
Organizational Support
- Provide maintenance support to shelters and supported housing locations across both organizations.
- Assist with facility moves, room turnovers, furniture assembly, and site setup activities.
- Support organizational projects and operational needs related to facility maintenance and building operations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience in building maintenance, facilities operations, construction trades, property maintenance, landscaping or a related field.
- Demonstrated ability to perform a wide range of general maintenance and repair tasks.
- Knowledge of building systems, maintenance practices, workplace safety requirements, and applicable regulations.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands, and manage work across multiple sites.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel between organizational locations required.
Working Conditions
- Regular travel between multiple shelters and supported housing sites across both organizations.
- Frequent lifting, carrying, climbing, bending, and use of maintenance tools and equipment.
- Exposure to a variety of indoor and outdoor environments and occasional emergency repair situations.
- May be required to respond to urgent maintenance issues outside regular working hours.
Pay: $26.00 per hour
