POSITION TITLE: Psychiatric Nurse
DEPARTMENT: Community Services
SUPERVISOR: Clinical Lead/Team Supervisor
TERMS: Full Time, 3 year term

Purpose of Position:
The Psychiatric Nurse provides clinical assessment, crisis stabilization, and mental health support within a community-based crisis response model. This role integrates medical and psychiatric expertise with culturally grounded care approaches.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Clinical Assessment and Intervention. (70%)
- Conduct comprehensive mental health, psychiatric, substance use, and suicide risk assessments for individuals experiencing crisis.
- Assess mental status, psychiatric symptoms, safety concerns, risk factors, protective factors, and level of intervention required.
- Provide crisis stabilization and nursing interventions for individuals experiencing acute mental health symptoms, emotional distress, or substance use-related crises.
- Monitor and assess changes in mental status, behaviour, physical health, and overall functioning.
- Develop collaborative crisis response plans, safety plans, and follow-up care plans with clients and families.
- Support medication review and coordination with physicians, psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and other prescribers.
- Monitor medication adherence, side effects, effectiveness, and client concerns, and communicate relevant information to prescribing professionals.
- Provide clinical consultation and recommendations regarding psychiatric, mental health, and substance use concerns.
- Facilitate access to psychiatric services, emergency mental health services, hospitalization, and specialized treatment programs when required.
- Collaborate with Crisis Response Team members to ensure coordinated and client-centered care.
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely clinical documentation and records in accordance with professional nursing standards.
- Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with professional nursing standards, applicable legislation, TteS policies, procedures, and cultural protocols.
- Care Coordination and Liaison. (20%)
- Collaborate with primary care providers, mental health clinicians, hospitals, treatment programs, and community-based services to support continuity of care.
- Act as a liaison between clients, families, health care providers, hospitals, ambulance services, RCMP, and other emergency responders.
- Participate in multidisciplinary case planning, case consultations, and care coordination meetings.
- Facilitate referrals to mental health, substance use, medical, cultural, and community support services.
- Support discharge planning and transition planning for individuals returning to the community following hospitalization or treatment.
- Coordinate follow-up services and monitor client engagement with recommended supports.
- Participate in critical incident reviews, debriefings, and quality improvement activities as required.
- Education and Outreach. (10%)
- Provide mental health, substance use, medication, and wellness education to individuals and families.
- Support clients and families in understanding diagnoses, treatment options, medications, and available community resources.
- Promote harm reduction, recovery-oriented practice, suicide prevention, and mental wellness initiatives.
- Participate in community outreach, prevention activities, workshops, and public education opportunities.
- Build positive working relationships with community members, partner agencies, and service providers to support access to care.
Financial Responsibility:
No direct budget responsibility
Supervision or Training Duties:
May provide orientation, mentoring, peer support and knowledge transfer as assigned.
Special Requirements:
Criminal Record Check – Vulnerable Sector required.
Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
Ability to work flexible hours, participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergencies.
Working Conditions:
Office, community, client homes, hospitals and partner facilities. Exposure to emotionally demanding, unpredictable and potentially high-risk situations.
Professional Certification, Education and Experience:
- Registered Nurse (RN or RPN) in good standing
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in mental health and/or substance use
- Crisis intervention Training
- Experience working with Indigenous communities

HOURS OF WORK: Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.
PAY GRADE: Starting at $49.00/hour or more depending on experience and education
