Position summary
Reporting to the director, communications, policy and engagement (CPE), the manager, communications is a strategic business partner working with leaders and program staff across the organization to lead and support critical functions and projects. As a collaborative, perceptive, innovative self-starter, the manager plays a key role in supporting the development and implementation of College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC’s (CPSBC’s) overarching communications policy and engagement plan. The manager is responsible for providing communications expertise and guidance, and identifying opportunities to advance corporate objectives, including enhanced engagement with key audiences through targeted communications.
The manager, communications will lead simultaneous projects and assignments, manage a social media program, coordinate responses to media inquiries, and identify innovative opportunities to raise awareness about CPSBC’s activities and build its public reputation.
This position has supervisory oversight of four individuals and is responsible for providing department leadership in the director’s absence.
The ideal candidate is an energetic, innovative and reliable communications professional who can actively assess and manage the communications needs of internal and external audiences. This person is a critical thinker who can act quickly and adapt easily to changing demands and competing priorities.
Duties and responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- plan, manage and implement communications programs and activities to support all of CPSBC’s departments and programs
- establish and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with internal and external audiences and partners, including CPSBC leadership and staff, board and committee members, Ministry of Health, health authority and partner agency counterparts
- manage complex issues and protect organizational reputation by leading crisis communications planning
- maintain and manage CPSBC’s brand strategy, and ensure content adheres to established brand and document standards, templates, and editorial style guide
- support the ongoing evolution of communications channels, including identifying opportunities for digital storytelling to educate and build awareness about the CPSBC’s role, mandate and activities
- provide communications leadership and counsel to others across the organization (writing and editing, key message development, presentations, etc.)
- manage CPSBC’s social media program
- coordinate the information collection and publishing process for corporate reports
Accountability
Work is performed under the general supervision of the director, communications, policy and engagement who provides strategic direction and broad guidance. The manager, communications is responsible for developing communications plans, schedules, budgets and timelines, determining and presenting options for communications planning to other departments, and resolving communication challenges.
While the director is advised and consulted on relevant matters, daily activities are conducted with a high degree of independence. When functioning as project leader, the manager, communications exercises sound judgment on issues, manages competing tasks and priorities effectively and professionally, and determines their own schedule to ensure deadlines are met.
The manager, communications collaborates with and supports other management and staff to achieve communications objectives.
Skills and qualifications
Required skills and qualifications include:
- post-secondary degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related field (graduate degree would be considered an asset), or equivalent combination of education and experience
- five to seven years of related experience in a corporate communications department, including experience with brand and reputation management, social media and supporting organizational change initiatives
- experience working in a regulatory environment, BC’s health-care system, or a similarly complex setting would be considered an asset
- people management experience, including performance planning, mentoring and developing team members
- experience providing leadership and direction in a contact centre would be considered an asset
- exceptional research, writing, proofreading and editing skills for a variety of communication materials such as website content, newsletter articles, briefing notes, backgrounders, news releases, and mass emails to licensees
- able to translate complex technical concepts into plain language for different audiences; keen attention to detail is critical
- able to communicate effectively and persuasively with all levels of the organization and with licensees, board and committee members, government, suppliers and vendors, etc.
- able to advise other departments, determine their communications needs and identify solutions
- superior interpersonal and oral communication skills, applied to public speaking and presentations
- strong technical skills including web and social media content management systems, video editing software, graphic design programs, etc.
- superior knowledge of standard Microsoft Office programs
- strong knowledge of current trends in digital/social media; experience developing and managing social media campaigns, including providing recommendations for new digital content, tools and strategies
- able to work independently and as a team to accomplish multiple tasks to a high standard; focused on achieving established department objectives
- able to lead, mentor and develop a small team and create a supportive, respectful, fun working environment; promote high standards of ethics and professionalism
- demonstrated poise and professionalism, tact and discretion
The compensation range for this position is $109,239 to $136,549 per year.
