Job Description

The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the manufacturing plant, ensuring accurate financial reporting, effective internal controls, and compliance with Canadian accounting standards and regulatory requirements. This role manages the accounting team, supports operational decision-making through financial analysis, and collaborates closely with plant leadership to drive financial performance, cost control, and continuous improvement initiatives. The role requires strong communication, problem-solving, collaborative and organizational skills to support business objectives.

Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

Manage all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, fixed assets, and payroll oversight.
Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
Ensure timely and accurate month-end and year-end closing processes.
Maintain integrity of financial records and accounting systems.
Monitor cash flow, working capital, and banking activities.
Assist with annual audits and coordinate with external auditors.

Manufacturing Accounting & Cost Control

Oversee inventory accounting and valuation, including raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods.
Analyze manufacturing variances, production costs, labour efficiencies, and overhead allocations.
Support inventory cycle counts and annual physical inventory counts.
Develop and maintain standard costing methodologies.
Partner with operations and purchasing teams to identify cost-saving opportunities and improve profitability.
Monitor key manufacturing performance indicators and provide financial insights to management.

Budgeting & Forecasting

Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic forecasting activities.
Monitor actual performance against budgets and forecasts.
Prepare variance analyses and provide recommendations for corrective actions.
Support strategic planning and capital expenditure evaluations.

Compliance & Internal Controls

Ensure compliance with applicable Canadian accounting standards, tax regulations, and company policies.
Maintain strong internal controls and financial governance processes.
Support HST, payroll-related filings, and other regulatory reporting requirements.
Identify financial risks and recommend mitigation strategies.

Leadership & Team Development

Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff.
Establish performance expectations and conduct regular performance reviews.
Promote a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and teamwork.
Coordinate workload, prioritize tasks, and ensure departmental objectives are achieved.

Business Partnership

Collaborate with plant management, procurement, production, and human resources teams.
Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support operational and strategic decisions.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and cross-functional projects.

Other duties as required

Education

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or related field.
CPA designation (CPA Ontario) an asset.

Experience

5-8 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
Minimum 2-3 years of leadership or supervisory experience.
Strong understanding of cost accounting and inventory management.
Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Microsoft Dynamics, Oracle, IQMS, or similar). PREFERENTIAL CONSIDERATION FOR THOSE EXPERIENCED WITH INFOR CSI and CPQ

Knowledge & Skills

Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting principles and financial reporting.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial analysis tools.
Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Working Conditions

Primarily office-based within a manufacturing plant environment. May be required to travel to secondary plant location in Ontario on occasion.
Occasional plant floor visits for inventory counts, production reviews, and operational meetings.
Minimum of 40 hours per week. Additional hours may be required during month-end, year-end, audits, and budgeting cycles.
