HDD Locator

North Star Contracting is seeking an experienced HDD Locator to join our underground utility division. We specialize in full-scope underground construction solutions for power, telecommunications, gas, water, and sewer projects across Alberta.
This is a hands-on role that goes beyond traditional locating. We’re looking for a skilled locator who is also comfortable operating support equipment and assisting the crew with utility installation, backfill, and restoration once drilling is complete.
Key Responsibilities
- Accurately locate and track Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) bore paths using locating equipment
- Interpret utility drawings, plans, and specifications to ensure accurate bore paths
- Perform pre-job planning, utility locates, and hazard assessments
- Work closely with the Driller to ensure bore paths meet project requirements and specifications
- Operate support equipment including excavators, skid steers, and loaders
- Assist with utility installations, pipe laying, backfill, and site restoration
- Maintain high standards of safety, quality, and professionalism on every job site
Requirements
Required:
- Minimum 5 years of HDD locating experience
- Strong experience operating heavy equipment (excavators, skid steers, loaders, etc.)
- Previous experience in telecommunications and/or power utility construction
- Valid Ground Disturbance Level II Certification
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (clean abstract preferred)
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and physically demanding environments
Preferred:
- First Aid, CSTS 2020, WHMIS, and other safety certifications
- Class 1 or Class 3 Driver’s License
- Experience with power, telecommunications, gas, water, and sewer projects
