Under direction of the Lab Infrastructure Manager or Product Group Manager. Works independently or with Senior Technologist to plan and build unique test equipment. Provides costs and scheduling information to meet deadlines and budget. Assists technical staff with selecting and setting up appropriate test equipment. The incumbent services and maintains a variety of general and complex laboratory equipment to ensure optimum performance. The incumbent monitors and executes preventive maintenance according to a prescribed schedule.
Job Responsibilities:
- Repairs and maintains laboratory equipment, analyses symptoms, performs diagnostic troubleshooting, identifies malfunctions and corrects faults, as required. Works with minimum supervision, applying principles of operation to equipment problem-solving. Records details of work performed. Contacts manufacturers for information on parts, service techniques and equipment data. Prepares requisitions for outside repairs, components, tools and service calls required for maintenance and/or projects.
- Designs, constructs and modifies laboratory test equipment and data acquisition systems. Records and files construction and modification details, updates existing drawings and records, and generates documentation for laboratory equipment. Evaluates work requests or specifications, as assigned. Prepares diagrams, layouts, parts lists and operating instructions.
- Performs the necessary adjustments and service of measuring instruments and equipment for calibration. Analyses and selects the proper instruments, tools, materials and methods to reduce errors to specified limits.
- Monitors performance of laboratory equipment, troubleshoots and analyses test systems, including electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic testing equipment. Provides technical guidance to technical staff.
- Safely and competently operates and uses a wide variety of tools and measuring equipment to perform duties. Assists with the on-going orientation and training of new or junior staff, as requested.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
- Makes decisions on routine purchases with managerial direction
- Makes decisions on design and timetable commitments with occasional managerial direction
- Relied upon to order samples, parts, tools, maintains records; and makes tests jigs in order to do testing
- Find opportunities to automate testing for increased throughput
Education and Experience:
- 3-year Technical Diploma (OACETT) or equivalent
- 2-4 years of experience
- Working knowledge of physics, mathematics and the desire to apply it required
- Creative, design and problem-solving talent is required
- CSA experience in laboratory, Metrology, an asset
- Experience with programmable controllers an asset
- Experience with Automation Languages (LabView, Python, C) an asset
- Electrical and industrial safety training and asset
As per the collective agreement, the starting bi-weekly pay rate for a Technologist - Planning & Development position is $3,696.15 CAD gross. CSA Group reserves the right to determine the appropriate level and pay step, and this will depend on factors such as education, licenses, certifications and experience. As part of our total rewards offering, permanent employees in this position may be eligible for our annual bonus program, subject to program eligibility requirements.
