Understood is a podcast that releases 3, 4-episode seasons a year. It takes you deep inside
the seismic shifts reshaping our world right now. From online porn and crypto chaos to the
rise of tech oligarchs, deepfake AI, and the broken promises of the internet — we explore

Reporting to the Senior Producer you’ll be responsible for crafting multiple seasons thatconnect with and grow our audience. You are a skilled journalist and audio storyteller, with aproven track record of creating premium quality audio and podcasts that resonate with audiences.
You have a knack for pinpointing great stories that are on people’s radar and
approaching them from different perspectives to bring new insights.
You’re that special blend: a highly creative and critical thinker; a great digger and chaser who
loves to play a hands-on role making great content; a strong, conversational writer who
knows how to connect with a podcast audience and you have the skills, experience and ear for crafting gripping, multi-episode narrative scripts.
This position will require you to step into a leadership role managing a Host, Producer or Associate Producer and Mixer so ideally, you have experience vetting and collaborating with others always with an eye on the production schedule.
True curiosity and an openness to diverse viewpoints and ideas are a must for this gig. So is an ability to work collegially on a small (but mighty) team, and to work well under tight deadlines. These are high impact stories with a fast turn around. Your sense of creative judgement, initiative and deadlines will help every member of the team bring their very best to the work we do.
Ensure our projects meet the highest standards of editorial excellence and align withCBC’s Journalistic Standards & Practices.
Work with the Senior Producer to outline the narrative arc of each episode and the season as a whole.
Guide editorial direction and production schedules, ensuring production stays on schedule, within budget.
Assign, coordinate and supervise the work of personnel (Host, Associate
Producer/Producer, Mixer) who contribute to the season.
Write scripts and question lines, chase guests, conduct interviews, produce host interviews, edit interviews, research and fact check.
Ensure the proper and accurate clearance of all material used in the program.
Provide host coaching for performance as needed.
Provide feedback on scripts and audio cuts.
Incorporate notes on mixes and scripts from Senior Producer and Execs.
Exercise editorial responsibility as delegated by Management and Executive
Producers.
Work with the Senior Producer, Executive Producers and Director to conceive and develop ideas and directions for future seasons, while concurrently producing an active season.
Support the audience growth team ahead of launch, providing episode titles and descriptions, season descriptions as well as direction on show art and promotional videos.
You have a deep knowledge of and passion for the podcast industry. You know
who the major players are, what significant trends are developing.
- Excellent writing, vetting and audio production skills with an ear for pacing, tone,presentation and production

- You are a clear and considerate communicator, who enjoys working closely on a team and can work collaboratively, taking direction and implementing notes
strategically.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of, and connection to, a wide range of different and diverse communities and people across Canada.
Openness to diverse perspectives and ideas, and differing points of view is
critical.
Experience programming content for digital audiences within a media
organisation.
- You have a track record of strong journalistic and editorial judgement.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with CBC Journalistic
Standards and Practices.
University degree or equivalent, as well as seven (7) years’ experience of which
three must involve work in an industry which is directly related to the area of
assignment.
Track record of creativity and innovation.- Strong attention to detail.
- Proven chase skills.
- Demonstrated expertise in writing for broadcast and writing of host scripts - and and ability to capture a conversational tone.
Ability to identify and write with a consistent host/show “voice”.
Demonstrated ability to use tape creatively - and write to it with flair.
Excellent organisational skills; ability to prioritise and delegate.
Demonstrated ability to plan and produce content for an online audience.
Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods.
Independent, self-motivated combined with the ability to work well in a team
