We are currently seeking an experienced Gear Cutting Operator to join our Gear Cutting Department. This role is ideal for a machinist with experience in gear manufacturing who enjoys working to tight tolerances in a precision aerospace environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate gear cutting machines in accordance with engineering drawings, manufacturing plans, and work instructions.
- Set up workholding, gear cutting tools, indexing, speeds, and feeds for efficient production.
- Operate gear hobbing, gear shaping, and other gear cutting equipment.
- Perform cutter changes and monitor cutter condition to ensure quality and production efficiency.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, gear specifications, and AGMA gear requirements.
- Inspect machined components using appropriate measuring equipment and document inspection results.
- Ensure all manufactured parts conform to customer specifications, drawings, travellers, and quality requirements.
- Complete setup sheets and maintain accurate production documentation.
- Estimate machining times and support production planning where required.
- Report machining or quality concerns to the Production Supervisor.
- Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized condition.
- Support efficient production flow by moving completed work promptly to the next operation.
- Work collaboratively with Team Leaders and other production personnel.

- Horizontal and Vertical Gear Hobbing Machines
- Fellows Vertical Gear Shapers
- Gear Lapping Equipment
- Gear Testing Equipment
- Manual Cylindrical Grinding Machines
- Manual Surface Grinding Machines
Preferred Experience
Experience with the following will be considered strong assets:
- Understanding of gear nomenclature, including pitch, pressure angle, helix angle, backlash, and runout.
- Setup of gear cutting tools including hobs, shaper cutters, and form tools.
- Reading AGMA gear specifications and engineering drawings.
- Gear inspection using over-pin/ball measurement, gear rollers, lead and involute inspection methods.
- Knowledge of heat-treatment distortion considerations.
- Documentation of inspection results in accordance with AS9100 and customer requirements.
- Material traceability and heat lot verification.
QualificationsRequired
- Minimum three (3) years of experience operating gear cutting machines in a manufacturing environment.
- Minimum three (3) years of general machine shop experience.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and manufacturing documentation.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English (reading, writing, and speaking).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Security Requirement
Avion Technologies Inc. is a Controlled Goods Registered facility. Successful candidates must be eligible to work in Canada and successfully complete security screening, including a police records check, as required under the Controlled Goods Program.

Pay: Competitive (based on experience)
