Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Denturist Assistant to join our specialized denture clinic. The ideal candidate will support the delivery of exceptional patient care by assisting the denturist during clinical appointments, managing patient records, and supporting a wide array of laboratory procedures.
This role offers an exciting opportunity to work in a focused, rewarding environment specializing in removable prosthodontics and advanced digital denture workflows. While prior mastery of all lab procedures is not mandatory, a solid foundation of knowledge, technical aptitude, and an eagerness to learn specialized laboratory tasks is essential. The Denturist Assistant will play a vital role in creating a welcoming atmosphere for our patients while maintaining high standards of clinical hygiene, safety, and laboratory precision.
Duties & Responsibilities Clinical Duties
- Chairside Assisting: Provide hands-on assistance to the denturist during consultations, preliminary and final impressions, jaw relation/bite registrations, try-ins, insertions, and subsequent adjustments.
- Patient Care & Comfort: Seat patients, prepare them for treatment, and ensure a compassionate environment, particularly for seniors or anxious patients navigating tooth loss.
- Operatory Management: Turn over, clean, and disinfect clinical treatment rooms between patients, strictly adhering to provincial infection control standards.
- Material Preparation: Mix clinical impression materials (alginates, VPS, polyethers) and bite registration materials efficiently and to exact specifications.
- Patient Education: Provide thorough pre- and post-operative instructions regarding denture care, cleaning protocols, adaptation periods, overnight storage, and adhesive use.
- Instrument Sterilization: Process, sterilize, and package clinical instruments using autoclaves and ultrasonic cleaners, ensuring proper monitoring logs are maintained.
Laboratory Support & Tasks
(Training will be provided, but candidates should possess a strong conceptual knowledge or foundational familiarity with these procedures)
- Impression Processing: General knowledge of how to disinfect incoming clinical impressions and accurately pour them using dental stone or plaster to create bubble-free, precise models.
- Model Archiving & Trimming: Understanding of how to safely trim, base, and articulate models while preserving critical anatomical landmarks.
- Custom Trays & Bite Blocks: Familiarity with the concepts and steps required to fabricate custom impression trays and wax bite registration blocks.
- Denture Repairs & Relines: Conceptual understanding of lab-side processing for modifications, including pouring matrices for relines, prepping broken dentures, and mixing acrylics.
- Finishing & Polishing: Willingness to learn to operate laboratory lathes, pumice wheels, and high-shine compounds to smooth and polish prostheses to a high gloss.
- Digital Workflow Support: Openness to learning and assisting with digital lab procedures, including operating desktop model scanners, managing 3D printer resin beds, and executing post-processing workflows (washing and UV-curing).
- Case Tracking & Logistics: Organize, log, and track laboratory cases to ensure they are completed on schedule for upcoming appointments.
- Lab Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness and organization of the lab benches, plaster traps, lathes, and polishing stations; monitor and restock lab consumables.
Administrative & Front-Office Support
- Records Management: Accurately update patient charts, clinical notes, and treatment timelines using dental office software.
- Scheduling: Coordinate patient appointments, balance the daily schedule to optimize clinical flow, and manage patient recall lists.
- Patient Reception: Greet arriving patients, answer phone inquiries, manage incoming emails, and process payments or insurance pre-authorizations when required.
Skills & Qualifications
- Foundational Lab Knowledge: A strong understanding or baseline familiarity with dental laboratory tasks (such as pouring models, handling acrylics, or polishing). Full hands-on proficiency is an asset, but a sharp technical aptitude and an ability to quickly learn these workflows is required.
- Clinical Competency: Proficiency in chairside assistance, clinical material handling, and strict adherence to infection control protocols.
- Technical & Software Aptitude: Familiarity with dental practice management software for scheduling and charting; experience or a strong interest in learning digital dentistry workflows (3D printing, scanning, slicing software) is a major asset.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional interpersonal skills, with a compassionate, patient-focused approach well-suited for a diverse demographic, including geriatric patients.
- Teamwork & Detail: Ability to work efficiently and collaboratively in a close-knit clinic environment while maintaining sharp attention to detail under tight timelines.
- Experience: Prior experience or formal training as a dental assistant or denturist assistant is preferred, but candidates with strong baseline dental knowledge and an enthusiastic willingness to learn the specialized intricacies of a denture practice are highly encouraged to apply.
