Caregiver Opportunity – Mississauga, Ontario (Retirement Residence) Schedule: Thursdays, 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM (3 hours/visit) Location: Mississauga, ON (Erin Mills area, AMICA Credit Mills retirement residence)
About the Client: This role supports an elderly woman living with her husband in an independent living suite at a well-appointed retirement residence in north Mississauga. She has mild dementia and is doing well in her current environment — the goal is to keep her engaged, give her husband a meaningful weekly break, and maintain her quality of life for as long as possible in independent living. The family is warm, involved, and organized. Her son handles logistics and finances; her daughter is also involved. The client's husband is present in the suite most of the time.
She has mild dementia — long-term memory is largely intact but she can be particular about new people and takes time to warm up. Patience and a gentle approach are essential. A government-funded PSW visits daily at 11:00 AM for approximately 15 minutes to assist with showering and personal hygiene — this role is not focused on personal care. The focus of these visits is social engagement, companionship, and cognitive stimulation. The facility has extensive amenities including a library, bistro, and programming that the caregiver can take advantage of during visits. The residence also has a memory care floor — the client is not assigned there but can visit for activities, and the caregiver may accompany her. The client responds well to her son's presence — the meet and greet will be coordinated with him present before stepping back to allow the client and caregiver to connect one-on-one. The family would like a consistent, familiar caregiver each week given the client's sensitivity to new people.
Responsibilities:
Companionship and social engagement — spending genuine, present time with the client; conversation, games, puzzles, or walking through the facility together Cognitive engagement — light memory activities, reading, or other mentally stimulating activities tailored to her interests and comfort level Facility outings — accompanying the client to the bistro, library, or programming within the building Wellness monitoring — observing mood, cognition, and behaviour each visit and communicating any changes to the family
What We're Looking For:
PSW certification or equivalent experience in personal support or companion care Experience working with clients who have dementia — essential Warm, patient, and socially engaging — the client needs time to build comfort and trust with someone new Respectful of the client's preferences and pace — she can be particular and the caregiver must follow her lead Comfortable working within a retirement residence environment Located in or near Mississauga (Erin Mills area)
